Field Set-up

Set-up and Pre Shed season suggestions

Utilizing multiple feeders, as shown below, will create a frequent stopping area that can accommodate multiple deer all day long. We recommend 4 feeders per targeted area. Using less than 4 units per area will work fine, however expect to locate lower numbers of sheds and attract less deer. Deer will create new runways and entrances to your personal feeding area (shown below). During winter months, deer will tend to bed and arrange their habits closer to your Shed Hunter areas. This is especially true in colder climates where winter food may be scarce. These facts allow you to collect shed antlers in a close, focused vicinity as well as right at the Shed Hunter sites. As shed hunters, we understand that focusing on wintering areas, where deer are concentrated, make for the best climate for retrieving shed antlers. Because our design allows one deer (buck) to feed at a time makes the strong pecking order of whitetail deer work in your favor. Sparring and fighting will occur often at these feeding sites. Our research has shown that the #1 cause of loosening and eventually shedding of antlers is late season sparring. It's natures way. This is why bucks band together following mating and into early spring.

Shed season searching suggestions

* First, check inside all the Shed Hunter feeders and in the close vacinity. When you begin shed hunting outside the immediate area, search in the same manner you would if locating a lost blood trail. Start in the center and begin making larger circles outward. Be aware of all spaces especially along fences, in high grasses and under thicker cover. Also, locate new bedding areas established by your Shed Hunter site. Follow trails from these bedding areas back to your feeding site. Shed hunting is a year round sport. Happy hunting!

More helpful hints

If feeding deer year round is permitted in your area, we suggest establishing a feeding pattern early in the year. Foods should be changed with each season to practice Quality Deer Management. Another strong suggestion is to avoid feeding deer on the ground or with feeders that allow multiple species of animals to access food. Conditions like these are breeding grounds for molds and other unhealthy situations. Please feel free to contact our prostaff for suggestions. Shed Hunter Company has developed many QDM tools that will help you with your hunting goals, protect the deer we so admire and keep our herds happy and healthy.
